I grew up on a small Indian Reservation near the border of Michigan and Ontario, Canada. My great grandfather was a Chippewa Medicine Man and my great grandmother was an Oneida Medicine Woman – neither spoke English. I have lived in all parts of Canada and the United States and I have learned about people from all walks of life. Prior to bing a Medicine Person, I was a senior policy analyst for a political organization representing Native Chiefs and their communities. Understanding Native treaty rights and the laws that impact those rights helps me help my people.
When my son was born I became a single father and I learned a little more about life. When I was 11 years old my best friend was shot and killed and I learned more about death. At 55 I became a grandpa & more to learn yet.
From picking tobacco plants at 14 yrs old for less than minimum wage to negotiating tobacco rights for Indigenous people, working for a living has taught me the value of learning while earning.
My first solo-ceremony was a 4-day sacred fire 30 yrs ago. My nephew had tragically died and my brother needed me. It was the first in many solo-ceremonies to come. A Medicine person is compelled to help the people.
Every session begins with teachings about spirit medicines like sage & sweetgrass.
An Indigenous way of moving forward begins with choice. We choose our path.
Learning to be ourself in the moment is a skill. it is also a way forward in life.
I follow ancient teachings that come from the spirit of sacred fires, Native elders, Native healers, Mother Earth and spirits of the medicine lodge (aka sweatlodge).
